Portland, Tennessee, located in Sumner County, has a history rooted in agriculture and transportation. The area that would become Portland was originally known as Richland when settlers began arriving in the early 19th century. The community started as a small farming town, with its fertile land making it ideal for agricultural pursuits. However, Portland’s true transformation began with the arrival of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in the 1850s.
The construction of the railroad turned the town into an important stop along the route, initially named Richland Station. This brought increased trade and population growth, as the railroad provided a critical link for moving goods and people between Nashville and Louisville. The railroad’s presence also made Richland Station a key point for shipping local agricultural products, especially strawberries, which became the area’s signature crop.
In 1888, due to confusion with another Richland in Tennessee, the town was renamed Portland. This new name gave the town a distinct identity and marked a new chapter in its development. As Portland grew, so did its reputation as a center for strawberry farming, earning it the title “Strawberry Capital of Tennessee.” The annual Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival, established in the early 20th century, celebrated the town’s agricultural heritage and continues to be a major event to this day.
Portland’s growth was steady through the 20th century, with the town expanding its economy beyond agriculture to include manufacturing and other industries. The city’s location along major transportation routes, including highways and the railroad, continued to play a significant role in its development.
Today, Portland balances its rich history with modern growth, maintaining its small-town charm while embracing new opportunities. The town’s historical legacy, especially its agricultural roots and railroad heritage, continues to shape its identity and community spirit.
